A girl's right to say no to marriage

Abstract

Child marriage is a violation of children’s human rights. Despite being prohibited by international human rights law and many national laws, child marriage continues to rob millions of girls of their childhood, forcing them out of education and into a life of poor prospects.Plan's global report calls on national governments and the international community to ensure national legislation prohibits child marriage, to ensure girls' access to quality education and to consistently raise child marriage as a human rights issue. This report draws on Plan’s own research and programming experience, as well as on a wide range of national and international studies, reports and initiatives on child marriage, its causes and consequences. The report hasdrawn on data from the UNFPA, based on Demographic and Health Surveys and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys, completed between 2000 and 2010, and UNICEF statistical information.
