Education and Empowerment of Girls and Women key to ending Child Marriages

Abstract

UNICEF reports that an estimated 46 per cent of India women are married before they are 18. This stunning statistic gets enhanced to 55 per cent when you move into rural areas. This is also true for boys. Child marriage not only results in additional familial responsibility, but also means the end of education, childhood and in most situations early parenthood contributing to the infact and maternal mortality in the country. The key deterrents to an early marriage are three – education, empowerment and economic development of women. But most important if all is the need for men to get engaged in preventing early marriage. This brief report, issued on the eve of the International Women’s Day 2009 which is themed “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls” looks at the issue and how various World Vision projects around the country have successfully responded to it.
